Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous dark web marketplace Silk Road, has received a mysterious donation of 300 bitcoins, worth approximately $31 million. The donation has been traced back to AlphaBay, a defunct dark web black market, as suspected by blockchain analysis company, Chainalysis.
According to Chainalysis, a crypto-tracing firm, the donation appears to have originated from AlphaBay, a dark web market that sold a wide variety of drugs and cybercriminal contraband from 2014 to 2017. The firm suggests that the funds might have come from a large-scale seller on the platform. “We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these funds originated in AlphaBay,” says Phil Larratt, Chainalysis’s director of investigations.
The independent crypto-tracing investigator ZachXBT had also tracked the funds, finding that they didn’t appear to come from Silk Road. Instead, the funds were linked to an address flagged in Chainalysis’ software tool Reactor as tied to illicit activity. ZachXBT noted suspicious patterns in how the donor moved the funds, including the use of multiple Bitcoin “mixers” and small, distributed quantities of cryptocurrency trades.
AlphaBay’s Significance in the Dark Web Market
AlphaBay was a significant player in the dark web market, facilitating $2 million in daily sales before its takedown in July 2017. The site’s creator and administrator, Alexandre Cazes, died under mysterious circumstances following his arrest, while the site’s second-in-command, Desnake, remains at large.
Any Bitcoins held by AlphaBay sellers or administrators since the site’s closure would have appreciated over 40-fold.
Ross Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to life in prison for his role in operating Silk Road. But he received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump in January 2025, after serving over 11 years. The pardon has sparked debate about the harshness of Ulbricht’s sentence and the potential for rehabilitation.
